R.E. Shane Ragan II,CIC,TK 254,BBA 1990 has been inducted as President of the Professional Insurance Agents of Georgia for 2010-2011. The PIA of Georgia has represented property and casualty agents in Georgia for 72 years. My father Gene Ragan (PIA President 1980) and I are the first father and son to have this privledge. I attribute the leadership skills instilled in me by my parents and Sigma Nu in helping me prepare for this opportunity.

The Psi Chapter of the Sigma Nu Fraternity has won some recent awards at the 2010 UNC Greek Chapter Excellence awards for the calendar year of 2009:

Recognition for having over 35 community service hours per brother logged
Recognition for over 90% campus involvement for 2009
Part of the winning team for Greek Week 2010
Winner of the New Member Challenge for 2010

Winning the New Member Challenge was an outstanding accomplishment for our chapter. We won $1000 towards our philanthropy- The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. We congratulate our Theta class of Fall 2009 for their efforts in this challenge.

The New Member Challenge is a competition between all the fraternity Candidate Classes that involves the following:

Planning an Alumni Event (Organized a football tailgate)
Planning a Philanthropy event (They raised of $500 for CFF)

Planning a Cross-council Collaboration event (Planned a Battle of the Bands at Pantana Bob's with a sorority)
Having a speaker talk about wellness (They had the Dean of Students come speak to the chapter about Alcohol abuse and safe use of alcohol)

April Updates

The spring semester has traditionally been a busy time for the brothers of Psi chapter, and 2010 has proven no different. Here are a few highlights from the past weeks, as well as some important upcoming events.

On March 27^th, brothers and their dates took a pair of chartered buses down to the Carolina Cup Steeplechase Races in Camden, SC, for a beautiful day of tailgating. The races cater to a large number of fraternities from universities throughout the Atlantic coast region, and our chapter was fortunate enough to receive a reserved tent directly across from two other Sigma Nu chapters. All three chapters partook in a seafood boil lunch, prepared on-site by Psi chapter’s Thad and Hunter Murray, before taking in the day’s events under Carolina blue skies.

On Saturday, April 10^th, a number of parents, alumni and brothers enjoyed a tailgate at the Psi Chapter house prior to the UNC Spring football game. Brothers and parents cooked up a delicious spread for all to enjoy before heading to Kenan Stadium to cheer on the Heels. If you missed out on Saturday’s festivities, please feel free to come by the Sigma Nu house on any game day in the fall for barbecue, music and plenty of good company!

From April 16-18^th, Sigma Nu took a brotherhood-wide trip to Hilton Head Isle for the annual Spring Formal. Brothers and their dates spent Friday and Saturday relaxing on the beautiful South Carolina beach before heading to the nearby Old Oyster Factory for a formal dinner dance. Aided by the musical styling of Sir Laurence and First Class, all in attendance enjoyed the chapter’s final social event of the semester.

The men of Psi chapter have also been working tirelessly to make our spring philanthropy event, the Sigma Nu Barbecue Cookoff, an enormous success. Mark your calendars for the afternoon hours (5-7) of April 24^th, when the finest pit masters in the state will be coming to the Sigma Nu house (109Fraternity Court) to serve up some seriously good Carolina barbecue in hopes of impressing ourpanel of celebrity judges. Tickets will be on sale for $5 in the weeks prior to the event and $8 at the door, and all proceeds will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Admission to the contest includes an endless plate of BBQ and southern sides, refreshments and live entertainment.

Recruitment:

This spring's rush was extremely successful, gathering eight candidates for membership. The Iota class candidates recieved their bids on January 22nd at the Spring Bid Cocktail, where the rest of the brotherhood congratulated them on choosing Sigma Nu. The brothers would like to congratulate the following members of the Iota class and wish them good luck as they strive to become Knights of Sigma Nu:

On January 28th, the brothers of Sigma Nu and the sisters of Phi Mu held a joint mixer at R&R Grill in downtown Chapel Hill.

On February 4th, the brothers of Sigma Nu hosted a "Sigma Zoo" themed cocktail at the chapter house. Bamboo and other foilage transformed the chapter room into a vibrant jungle, and brothers invited dates to the house for a night of fun in the jungle.

Philanthropy

Mark your calendars for the First Annual Sigma Nu Barbecue Cookoff, which will take place during the afternoon of April 24th. The finest pit masters in the state will be coming to 109 Fraternity Court to serve up some seriously good Carolina barbecue in hopes of impressing our panel of celebrity judges. Tickets will be on sale for $5 in the weeks prior to the event and $8 at the door. All proceeds will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. In addition to our signature spring event, the brothers have become regular volunteers at Club Nova, a Durham organization which helps with renovations and other services in underprivileged neighborhoods.

Alumni

The brothers of Sigma Nu are proud to announce our First Annual Alumni Cocktail, which will be held at the renouned Franklin Hotel right in the heart of Downtown Chapel Hill. This will truly be a special night, filled with live jazz, butlered hors d'oeuvres, signature desserts, and plenty of dancing. We are combining this event with our Parent's Cocktail, which will make this event even more memorable. Be sure to mark April 24th on your calendar and look for upcoming notices and RSVPs.
